Island Journal

September/October 2000 Issue

Tuesday
Sunset bike ride with S. Made him go ahead of me; daredevil lizards on the bike path were freaking me out.

Thursday
Looked on eBay for Sanibel things. Found an old photo of the ferry for sale.

Friday
Grackles have taken over the birdseed bells from the cardinals.

Saturday
Tennis at Sundial with EM. Missed a big shot as I was looking at a flock of ibis overhead.

Sunday
Took a Jensen’s boat to Pine Island for lunch at JD’s. Nemo gets lucky with leftovers tonight!

Wednesday
Whippoorwill should be leaving pretty soon. Will miss his evening call.

Thursday
Scraped the dinner plates onto the rocks for our crabs. Feeding frenzy!

Saturday
Had to take a cormorant to CROW. (Check on him Monday.)

Monday
CROW says all is okay, but the bird needed some help. How do they know what to do for so many different species?

Thursday
Played hooky and went to Cayo Costa for the day with BH as a guide. Good shelling, incredible Calusa tales.

Friday
Fresh tuna steaks from Bailey’s; marinated them in wasabi, ginger, and soy, then S grilled them, rare. Life is good. Nemo had a blissful feast, sans wasabi.

Sunday
Dreamed there was a game show shot on Captiva’s beach.

Tuesday
Shot a whole roll of film as a squall rolled in from the Gulf. My favorite stormy color combo–white, turquoise, navy blue.

Wednesday
Took my bike in the van to the east end of the island, just to ride somewhere I hardly ever get to.

Friday
Perfect night for a sunset sail.

Saturday
Practiced throwing my net on the causeway–caught a jillion baitfish, and one mystery thing.

Sunday
Early tennis, lunch on the river in town, then a great movie in a nice cold theater. If I were a little taller, I might think life is perfect.

Wednesday
Sonic boom woke us up in the middle of the night. What was that?

Thursday
How many years do I have to live here to remember that space shuttles make sonic booms? Ha ha.…

Friday
Not too long before we get to eat the hurricane supplies. Glad we decided to upgrade this year.

Saturday
Saw seven manatees at Jensen’s docks.

Sunday
Back to Jensen’s for a big party. Lots of great music; it was Old Home Week.
