Island Journal

May/June 2001

Sunday
Moved my writing desk in front of the window. Why did I wait so long to do this?

Tuesday
D in from Maine for a week. Went up to Captiva to visit and found a large speckled eggshell in the yard—cream with brown spots. What kind of bird can do this?

Wednesday
Hawk perched right in front of my window! Magnificent.

Thursday
Early tennis. Played like a champ. Funny…last week I couldn’t hit the side
of a barn. Never know which Me will turn up.

Friday
Played hooky to come to the East Coast. Am in search of the funkiest ocean-front hotel I can find.

Saturday
Live from the Pirate’s Cove! Swimming in the Atlantic, then lunch at the chickee bar. Fortified and funkified. Visiting my favorite Irish bar in Pompano tonight.

Sunday
Lincoln Road flea market in South Beach, a stop at Clyde Butcher’s gallery in the Everglades, and home with Nemo by sunset. Crossing the Sanibel causeway again is always the best part of any trip.

Tuesday
Hawk still around, plus several hairy woodpeckers, one of which was carrying a large yellow nut. I didn’t know we HAD large yellow nuts!??

Thursday
My pileated woodpecker pair doesn’t seem to mind all the hairy woodpeckers that are about. They remain noisy with a very distinctive call.

Friday
Hooray! S brought home a canoe. We could launch Chickcharnie and the new canoe and have a rowing contest. I think I would win.

Saturday
The Good Me showed up for tennis again. Inaugurated the canoe and paddled to Kelsie’s house. Only the dogs were there, but they seemed glad to see me.

Tuesday
Popped into BIG Arts—new show is up—then Katie Gardenia’s for early dinner. No leftovers for Nemo.

Wednesday
Have learned more about birds in 10 days of my desk in front of the window than I did in 10 years prior!

Thursday
Met S on the beach for sunset; sand in my toes always makes my worries go away.

Saturday
Took M&D to J.T. Smith’s latest show. Terrific as always. Does his brain ever rest?

Sunday
Met MB early for a walk and some shelling, then home to relax on back porch with the Times. Accomplished absolutely nothing all day.

Monday
Dolphin were herding mullet all over the bayou at dusk.

Tuesday
Hawk perched right in front of my window again. I shudder to think we considered cutting the dead limb that is now his favorite pit stop.

Thursday
E-mail from Italy and Australia: an international day. Got inspired and mailed a coconut to DD.

Saturday
NW, EM and I are taking a boat to North Cap for the day tomorrow. Am really looking forward to it.

Sunday
Have packed the smoked fish, crackers, apples, wine, water, Times, maps of Italy, sunscreen, hats, radio, chart, and a new article about beekeeping. Off we go!
