INSPIRED DESIGN

by Kris Kolar

When it comes to design there is no right or wrong, design is an expression of personal style. Design means to ‘plan and fashion artistically or skillfully’ and the key to a great design is to find an inspiration piece.

In my role as Vice President of Interior Design for Robb & Stucky Interiors, I obtain inspiration for Robb & Stucky original furniture collections and interior design projects from the fashion industry, architecture, nature, world travels and even trends of the past.

Today, clean lines and earthy elements are emerging trends in furniture and design. From organic materials such as coco twig and petrified wood to images of nature incorporated into the forms, the eco-motif is ever-present. When it comes to this design trend, what is old is new again. Frank Lloyd Wright is renowned for designs are based on the ideas and principles of organic architecture. As you will see, we are fortunate to have the ‘largest collection of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture on a single site’ located here in the state at Florida Southern College.

An extension of this trend that would fit into Wright’s designs embraces the use of texture. Incorporating stone and wood elements (especially in a rough, unfinished state) to the décor in the form of flooring or furnishings adds weight to the room and ties back the earthy foundation. In addition, texture can be introduced through fabrics.

Of course, design and self expression also comes in the form of fashion apparel. Who knows our style best than the local boutiques that customize their product for us, their clients? Find inspiration and create your signature style from buyers who know you and the Southwest Florida lifestyle.

This issue of Times of the Islands and RSW Living illustrates how we set our own design style whether it is in the architecture of our home, through interior décor or a personal fashion statement. The art of design is rooted in inspiration, I encourage you to go out and be inspired through your world of style!
