Island Journal

January/February 2000 Issue

Friday
The whole world has arrived here for the 2000 rollover. I’m so lucky to live where everybody wants to come. Tonight is the party to end all parties!

Sunday
Oh my gosh, I need a whole book to describe New Year’s Eve. It lasted so long, when I finally went to sleep, I didn’t wake up until tonight. I can’t believe it’s 2000!!!!!!

Wednesday
Still ruining checks. I may not get this 2000 thing right until 2001.

Friday
Big day—finally spied Sneaky Snake, who’s been living under our porch and leaving us skins all these years.

Saturday
Early tennis lesson with JW, then a long beach walk with MB. Crisp air, three dolphins, one orange jingle.

Sunday
Entire day consisted of reading the Sunday Times and watching our birdbath. Recorded favorite bath times for all my regulars.

Tuesday
Had a dream in which there were no cars—only rowboats.

Wednesday
Nemo came home suspiciously happy; I don’t think I want to know why.

Friday
Called Jensens for water taxi to Cabbage Key sleepover tomorrow night.

Sunday
Cabbage was a hoot, as always. S actually ran into two friends from the Outer Banks. Still love that farmer’s breakfast.

Wednesday
New art exhibit at Captiva Civic Association. Especially liked work by a local cartoonist.

Thursday
Deep-cleaned...my tennis bag.

Saturday
Went fishing with GP. Wasted the bait, but made good use of the beer.

Sunday
Started re-reading my John McDonald books. S reminds me of Travis McGee.

Tuesday
Pirate Playhouse tonight with E&M. Caught raccoons burglarizing our birdseed when we got home.

Thursday
Had enchiladas out on the back porch for dinner—spicy food, cool air. We dined to dancing mullet.

Friday
Great stars tonight!

Saturday
Went to a garage sale with S—his favorite form of recycling. Bought a juicer. K&M’s lemons are thick on the tree.

Monday
Rowed S around the bayou tonight. No songs (yet) from our annual whippoorwill.

Tuesday
Fresh lemonade for dinner. Juicer was a good find.

Thursday
Had a nightmare the Island Store on Captiva turned into a 7-11.

Friday
S and I met NW, JW, and ND at The Green Flash for snacks and cocktails, then S took me to King’s Crown for a little dancing. Honeymoon’s definitely not over.

Saturday
Cards by the pool at J&M’s. Lazy, lazy, lazy.

Monday
M&A came over for dinner. We’ve hatched a plan to shoot a 15-minute
