Island Journal

November/December 2001

Monday
Flock of ibis still in the neighborhood. Glad they’re sticking around.
Wednesday
Took NW for a canoe ride in Dinkins Bayou. Mullet were really jumping tonight.
Thursday
S surprised me with a new pair of strong binoculars. Best investment for islanders.
Friday
Inaugurated the binocs with some serious stargazing on the front porch. A cool front always has a bonus—clear skies!
Saturday
Research Note: Where do doves sleep?
Sunday
Left Jensen’s early this morning with S and J&M; went everywhere you can go in a boat. Sun was hot. Beer was cold. Dolphins were abundant. Life is good.
Wednesday
Tennis lesson with JW. His great humor makes a goofy stroke bearable.
Friday
Was asked to play golf!!! Haven’t hit a ball in six years. Not sure they know what they’ve done in asking me.
Saturday
Score: 1 great putt, 2 long drives, 2 trees, 3 alligators, 3 eagles, 0 birdies, 5 ponds, 7 balls. Monday
Yippee! Ran into E&G at the post office; they’re in town for 3 days. Gonna whoop it up at the Lazy tonight.
Wednesday
S suggested camping on North Cap or Cayo Costa soon. Sounds good to me!
Friday
S flew us over North Cap to check out the camping scene; only one tent there now.
Sunday
Trifecta! Got e-mails from Australia, Italy, and England. And here I am on this little island in the gulf. I love technology.
Tuesday
E&M over for dinner and M brought fish he caught this morning. How do we get him to do this more often?
Wednesday
Took the video cam down to the beach. Shot a three-minute movie for J. It should definitely make a 10-year-old laugh.
Thursday
Still in a beach mood. Mailed coconuts to several pals up north.
Friday
Watched all the snow reports on The Weather Channel. Florida entertainment.
Saturday
Met T at the Sundial pool bar. Pretended we were on vacation. Went shelling to top off the afternoon.
Sunday
Nemo and I hung out on the back porch all afternoon while S napped. A little tuna, the Sunday Times. What more could you want?
Tuesday
Saw a hilarious comedy tonight at the J. Howard Wood; they had a full house.
Wednesday
Took my first yoga class at BIG Arts. I could really get hooked on this.
Thursday
Met S on the beach for sunset. Clouds on the horizon were shaped like mountains. Thought we saw a ray jump about 100 feet offshore.
